Bernie Sanders launches LGBT friendly campaign ad (VIDEO)
The presidential hopeful says he want to ‘bring people together’ in the new video.
Following his impressive win in New Hampshire earlier this week, US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has launched a LGBT-inclusive inclusive campaign ad.
“Our job is not to divide. Our job is to bring people together,” the self-proclaimed socialist can be heard saying in the background of 60-second clip.
“If we do not allow them to divide us up by race, by sexual orientation, by gender, by not allowing them to divide us up by whether or not we were born in America, or whether we’re immigrants,” he continues.
“When we stand together, as white and black and Hispanic and gay and straight and woman and man; when we stand together and demand that this country works for all us, rather than the few, we will transform America.
“And that is what this campaign is about: is bringing people together.”
Sanders recently accused main rival Hillary Clinton of “insulting the entire gay community” with her previous stance on marriage equality – but despite being a long-time supporter of LGBT rights himself, his historic stance on equal marriage is also less clear than it seems.
The former Secretary of State has come under scrutiny for only backing same-sex marriage in 2013 – though Sanders himself did not officially back same-sex marriage until 2009.
Sanders has also remained much less vocal on LGBT rights during the campaign – Clinton included a gay couple in her very first campaign announcement back in April.
Clinton also has a raft of LGBT policies – which includes 24 sweeping pledges across LGBT areas – over Sanders, who has outlined just seven specific LGBT policies.
Of course, both Sanders and Clinton have far better records than the Republican frontrunners – most of whom are committed to overturning same-sex marriage.
Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have both backed a plan to overturn the Supreme Court ruling on equal marriage, while Donald Trump also says he’d “consider” doing so.
