No joy at the BAFTAs for the Danish Girl, following five nominations

The Danish Girl has lost out at the BAFTAs after being nominated in five categories.

Eddie Redmayne was nominated as Best Actor, for his role as Lili Elbe in the Danish Girl but lost out to Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in the Revenant.

The real-life Elbe was a transgender pioneer, and is believed to be the first trans woman to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Redmayne had hoped for a BAFTA double, as he is nominated in the same category which he won last year for The Theory of Everything.

Meanwhile, the film lost out in the Outstanding British Film, Costume Design and Make up and Hair categories.

Speaking on the red carpet before the ceremony, Redmayne said Elbe’s was “one of the great love stories of the 20th century”, saying “it was a privilege” to play the role.

Tom Hooper, the director of The Danish Girl, has said that he cast Redmayne in the lead role because of the actor’s ‘gender fluidity’.

He then went on to say that he hopes the casting of Redmayne in the role will highlight the lack of diversity in Hollywood.
