A third of Trump supporters want to ban gays from the US as well as Muslims
A third of Donald Trump supporters want to ban gays from entering the United States as well as Muslims.
The news comes from a Public Policy Polling survey in South Carolina – following Mr Trump’s controversial pledge to ban Muslims from entering the US.
The survey found that while the vast majority of Trump supporters backed his pledge on the issue, 31% want it to go even further – backing a ban on homosexuals entering the United States as well.
The polling found disproportionate support for a ban on gays among Mr Trump’s supporters – with just 17% of Ted Cruz supporters backing a ban in second place, despite Cruz’ extreme anti-LGBT stances.
It comes amid concern about Mr Trump’s appeal to far-right voters, with his supporters also backing a proposal to shut down all Mosques by 40% to 36%. A third of Trump supporters want Islam to be criminalised entirely.
However, the poll sample is quite small – with just 897 Republicans surveyed.
Elsewhere this week, Donald Trump declined to rule out a conspiracy theory that conservative Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia was secretly murdered by liberals, after he died from a suspected heart attack.
Speaking to a right-wing radio host, Mr Trump appeared to pander to the host’s theory that Justice Scalia was murdered.
Mr Trump said: “I’m hearing it’s a big topic, the question… it’s a horrible topic.
“They say they found a pillow on his face. It’s a pretty unusual place to find a pillow.”
Murderers, of course, are renowned for leaving clues and murder weapons in places where they can be identified by right-wing conspiracy theorists.
