Gaga said paying tribute to Bowie was probably the most challenging thing sheā€™s done in career, as she credited the star with shaping her identity as an individual and a performer. Itā€™ was her second huge event in a week, performing the national anthem at the Super Bowl last Sunday.

She said: ā€œWhen I was 19 years old, I started to live my life like him. I began to consume art and fashion and art history and a combination of those things, performance technique.

ā€œI only hung out with people that were artists and that was the way that he was and I learned that from him.ā€

She added: ā€œWhat Iā€™m trying to say is thereā€™s people that love David Bowie, and then thereā€™s David Bowie fans, and thereā€™s Bowie kids, who live like him.

ā€œI canā€™t express to you, I donā€™t know who Iā€™d be if I didnā€™t have (him as) a figure in my life.

ā€œI donā€™t know what my identity would be.ā€

Big winners on the night included Taylor Swift, Mark Ronson, Ed Sheeran and Muse.
