Wildly popular British TV series SuperTed is winging its way back to our screens, but will be without a “flamboyant gay” sidekick.

New episodes of the originally Welsh series will be on UK TV screens in 2016, but its creator Mike Young has said some of the characters may need a revamp.

Speaking in 2014, he said: “Popeye used to smash people in the face. And it was very funny.

He continued: “In SuperTed, we had a gun-slinging cowboy, a flamboyantly gay skeleton and a fat guy who had jokes made about his weight.

“And all these things you just wouldn’t do today.

“But you can still write the show in a funny, entertaining way.”

The show, which featured a rejected teddy, who got turned into a flying, crime-fighting super bear, was originally developed for S4C, but later was translated from Welsh into English and went to the BBC.

The 70-year-old has spent two years in talks about bringing SuperTed back but now says they are closer than ever to get the go ahead.
