Caitlyn Jenner urges veto of South Dakota trans bill
Olympic gold medalist and trans icon, Caitlyn Jenner, has appealed to South Dakota’s Governor to veto a bill that activists claim will oppress transgender people.
Ms Jenner took to Twitter to ask her followers to join her in putting pressure on Dennis Daugaard to veto the bill that would force school children to use facilities that correspond to their assigned gender.
If signed into law, the legislation would be the first in the United States to directly target trans people since the Supreme Court ruling last year that introduced marriage equality.
The former athlete has also encouraged people to sign a petition put forward by the American Civil Liberties Union that would put pressure on Governor Daugaard to reject the measure.
The Governor has recently said he will discuss the legislation with members of the trans community before taking any actions.
The bill was passed by South Dakota’s State House earlier this month, where advocates said it would protect “bodily privacy rights” of “biological boys and girls.”
