David Bowie’s son praises Brit Awards for ‘beautiful’ Lorde tribute
The pop star’s understated performance won the seal of approval from Duncan Jones.
Nineteen-year-old New Zealand songstress Lorde stole the show at this year’s Brit Awards, as she delivered a sombre version of one of David Bowie’s greatest songs during a touching tribute to the late star.
Her stunning performance of ‘Life On Mars’ came after Bowie was honoured with a posthumous Brits Icon Award at last night’s ceremony.
Eurthymics singer Annie Lennox introduced the award by paying tribute to Bowie while actor and friend Gary Oldman accepted the award on Bowie’s behalf.
“I can share with you that he faced his illness with immense courage, dignity, grace and customary humour, even in dire circumstances,” the actor said.
“When he wrote to tell me the bad news he had cancer, he said: ‘The good news is I’ve got my cheekbones back’.”
The performance which followed was backed by musicians who played with the late music icon for decades and won praise from audiences and critics alike – including Bowie’s son.
Following the tributes, Duncan Jones took to Twitter to write: “Finally found the links to tonight’s Brits. Just… beautiful. Thank you.”
It follows his scathing review of last week’s Grammys tribute – performed with energy, zeal and multiple costume changes by pop star Lady Gaga.
Gaga’s tribute to Bowie may have impressed fans worldwide – but it didn’t go down too well with film maker Jones.
“Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.’ Damn it! What IS that word!?” he tweeted.
The word he was looking for, of course, was ‘gaga’ – giving the exact Oxford English Dictionary definition of the term.
Gaga performed ten of the icon’s hits from the 70s and early 80s – including Space Oddity, Changes, Fame, Let’s Dance and Heroes.
However, it seems Jones – and many of Bowie’s fans – preferred Lorde’s understated, stripped back attempt at capturing the true magic of the legendary icon.
