The pop starā€™s understated performance won the seal of approval from Duncan Jones.

Nineteen-year-old New Zealand songstress Lorde stole the show at this yearā€™s Brit Awards, as she delivered a sombre version of one of David Bowieā€™s greatest songs during a touching tribute to the late star.

Her stunning performance of ā€˜Life On Marsā€™ came after Bowie was honoured with a posthumous Brits Icon Award at last nightā€™s ceremony.

Eurthymics singer Annie Lennox introduced the award by paying tribute to Bowie while actor and friend Gary Oldman accepted the award on Bowieā€™s behalf.

ā€œI can share with you that he faced his illness with immense courage, dignity, grace and customary humour, even in dire circumstances,ā€ the actor said.

ā€œWhen he wrote to tell me the bad news he had cancer, he said: ā€˜The good news is Iā€™ve got my cheekbones backā€™.ā€

The performance which followed was backed by musicians who played with the late music icon for decades and won praise from audiences and critics alike ā€“ including Bowieā€™s son.

Following the tributes, Duncan Jones took to Twitter to write: ā€œFinally found the links to tonightā€™s Brits. Justā€¦ beautiful. Thank you.ā€

It follows his scathing review of last weekā€™s Grammys tribute ā€“ performed with energy, zeal and multiple costume changes by pop star Lady Gaga.

Gagaā€™s tribute to Bowie may have impressed fans worldwide ā€“ but it didnā€™t go down too well with film maker Jones.

ā€œOverexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.ā€™ Damn it! What IS that word!?ā€‹ā€ he tweeted.

The word he was looking for, of course, was ā€˜gagaā€™ ā€“ giving the exact Oxford English Dictionary definition of the term.

Gaga performed ten of the iconā€™s hits from the 70s and early 80s ā€“ including Space Oddity, Changes, Fame, Letā€™s Dance and Heroes.

However, it seems Jones ā€“ and many of Bowieā€™s fans ā€“ preferred Lordeā€™s understated, stripped back attempt at capturing the true magic of the legendary icon.
