David Bowie’s son praises Brit Awards for ‘beautiful’ Lorde tribute
The pop starās understated performance won the seal of approval from Duncan Jones.
Nineteen-year-old New Zealand songstress Lorde stole the show at this yearās Brit Awards, as she delivered a sombre version of one of David Bowieās greatest songs during a touching tribute to the late star.
Her stunning performance of āLife On Marsā came after Bowie was honoured with a posthumous Brits Icon Award at last nightās ceremony.
Eurthymics singer Annie Lennox introduced the award by paying tribute to Bowie while actor and friend Gary Oldman accepted the award on Bowieās behalf.
āI can share with you that he faced his illness with immense courage, dignity, grace and customary humour, even in dire circumstances,ā the actor said.
āWhen he wrote to tell me the bad news he had cancer, he said: āThe good news is Iāve got my cheekbones backā.ā
The performance which followed was backed by musicians who played with the late music icon for decades and won praise from audiences and critics alike ā including Bowieās son.
Following the tributes, Duncan Jones took to Twitter to write: āFinally found the links to tonightās Brits. Justā¦ beautiful. Thank you.ā
It follows his scathing review of last weekās Grammys tribute ā performed with energy, zeal and multiple costume changes by pop star Lady Gaga.
Gagaās tribute to Bowie may have impressed fans worldwide ā but it didnāt go down too well with film maker Jones.
āOverexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.ā Damn it! What IS that word!?āā he tweeted.
The word he was looking for, of course, was āgagaā ā giving the exact Oxford English Dictionary definition of the term.
Gaga performed ten of the iconās hits from the 70s and early 80s ā including Space Oddity, Changes, Fame, Letās Dance and Heroes.
However, it seems Jones ā and many of Bowieās fans ā preferred Lordeās understated, stripped back attempt at capturing the true magic of the legendary icon.
