Mayor claims instant noodles can ‘make babies gay’
The mayor claims that the milk formula and instant noodles can make children LGBT.
The mayor of the Indonesian city of Tangerang has said milk formula and instant noodles could make babies gay.
Arief R Wismansyah made the comments at a city-run pregnancy seminar, puzzling many in attendance.
“To create Indonesian children that are healthy smart and competitive, the most important thing is, from the beginning, to provide them adequate nutrition, especially breastfeeding,” reports Coconuts Jakarta.
Seemingly unfamiliar with concept of science, Wismansyah went on to say parents were so busy that they often only fed their children formula and instant foods – which could have a permanent negative effect on their child’s development, such as making them gay…
“So, it’s no wonder that recently there are more LGBT,” he said.
Wismansyah’s outburst is the most recent anti-gay comment to emerge from the Southeast Asian country.
Indonesia’s leading psychiatrists recently classed homosexuality as ‘mental disorder’ – claiming it should not be left ‘untreated’.
Earlier this month, the country’s Communications and Information Ministry announced plans to ban Tumblr due to its ‘LGBT content’, after advising social media operators WhatsApp and Facebook to limit the use gay emojis.
Last year, an Indonesian province introduced a harsh new law that re-introduces caning as a punishment for homosexuality – and it also applies to foreign tourists.
The brutal practise takes place in the province of Aceh – the only part of the Asian nation which enforces Islamic Sharia law and has autonomous control over crime and punishment.
Homosexuality is legal in the rest of Indonesia, though the age of consent for gay sex is higher than for straight sex.
Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population – but outside of the Aceh, most practice a more moderate form of the faith.
