Sam Smith shocked to learn he isn’t first gay Oscar winner
Sam Smith seemed surprised to when told that he wasn’t the first gay man to win an Oscar.
After making the bold statement on stage during Sunday night’s ceremony, it was not long before Sam Smith was informed that a number of gay people had won at the awards in the past.
However, Smith made yet another faux pas after he was corrected – by automatically assuming he was only the second gay man to win one of the much-coveted statuettes.
“S**t. F**k that. Two’s my lucky number, so it’s all good. Who was the other person?”
There have actually been a number of openly gay award winners – including Elton John, Stephen Sondheim, filmmaker Bill Condon and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black – who was quick to hit back at singer’s claims.
The trouble started after Smith seemingly mis-read a recent interview with Sir Ian McKellen – in which he stated that no openly gay man had ever won the Best Actor Oscar.
“I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an Oscar,” Smith said upon winning.
“If this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world.
“I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope that we can all stand as equals one day.”
And although his sentiment might have been a good, Smith’s mistake has won him a nasty backlash.
As well as criticism from the LGBT community, Smith was also lambasted by Lady Gaga fans, after the American Horror Story star lost out to Smith and his Bond theme, Writing on The Wall.
However, Smith’s harshest critic so far has arguably been Mr Lance Black – who also called the singer out on a slightly more personal matter.
The award-winning writer of Milk took the opportunity to put Smith straight – whilst warning him off his fiance, diving champ Tom Daley.
“Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé,” he wrote.
