Singer gives ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ gay teen twist (VIDEO)
Tom Goss’ latest music video is a cover of Dusty Springfield’s iconic song.
This time the story is reimagined, with the song telling the story of a gay teen who falls in love with the son of an anti-gay preacher.
The video shows the teens as escaping together to enjoy the bliss of young love.
Sadly, their happiness is short lived and when their love is discovered, they face reprimand from their families and community.
One of the boys even contemplates suicide.
However, the pair are ultimately able to break free from the religious community that seeks to change and oppress them.
Goss says the story is one that hits home, as he has faced the challenges brought up by being both religious and gay.
“The story of the video is one that hits home to me,
“I had planned to become a Catholic priest – I spent 18 months in seminary following college before I realised I was gay.
“I also attempted suicide when I was 13. Although it was for different reasons, it’s a place that I’ve been.”
The award winning musician and LGBT advocate recently released the video for another of his songs, ‘Breath and Sound’, that tells the story of three couples, who meet – and fall in love – through a moving dance sequence.
‘Breath & Sound’ illustrates through lyrical dance that the act of falling in love and forming a relationship is the same for all couples – regardless of sexual orientation, gender or ethnicity.
Goss said that he wanted the LGBT community to feel as if the video was “telling their story. I want them to be moved.”
“That’s why I’m doing this. There isn’t enough LGBT content being produced,” he added.
“Historically, people have been afraid to tell these stories – but I’m not.
“I will always use my voice to help tell the stories of those who cannot.”
