Everybody’s favourite warrior princess will back onscreen in an upcoming reboot.

LGBT icon Xena: The Warrior Princess will soon be battling her way back onto television screens – fifteen years after the last episode of the show aired.

However, fans of the cult icon and her long time lover Gabrielle will be delighted to discover that their romance will feature at the forefront of the new series.

Xena: The Warrior Princess to be out and proud in new reboot

NBC has ordered a new Xena pilot from writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, architect behind the CW’s cult hit The 100 – which recently provoked viewer backlash after the death of a popular LGBT character.

Grillo-Marxuach told fans that he plans to be a little more forthcoming about the undeniable chemistry between Xena and Gabrielle with this updated version.

“Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons,” he said during a Q&A on Tumblr.

“There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually [sic] in first-run syndication in the 1990s,” he added.

“It will also express my view of the world – which is only further informed by what is happening right now – and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.”

Xena originally debuted in 1995, as a spin-off to the equally mythological TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

During its six-season run, the show’s popularity excelled – largely due to the on/off lesbian relationship, with the pair now regarded as feminist and LGBT icons.

The news follows a report by TV watchdog Ofcom earlier this month, which claimed broadcasters are failing to make minorities feel represented on screen.

The report revealed that a majority of the LGBT community feel that they are either under-represented on television or portrayed in a negative way.
