Gay senator employs brilliant tactic to sabotage anti-gay bill
A Senator has taken the filibuster to the next level, when successfully undermining an anti-gay bill.
Senator Jim Dabakis, of the Utah State Senate, took the drastic action in order to sabotage an amendment which would have defined a married couple as “husband and wife”, for tax purposes.
After the Senate originally passed the bill, a House committee sent it back to the Senate late on Monday in order to get approval.
But Senator Dabakis wasn’t having any of it.
When it came to a roll call vote, which started at 11.57pm, Dabakis stalled the vote, using sneezes.
As it was his turn to vote, the Senator cleared his throat, and sneezed continually, until the session expired at midnight.
Obviously this made him unpopular with Republican colleagues who glared at him, and even tried to get him to be skipped over in order to finish the vote.
But after it was all said and done, the bill died, and Senator Dabakis went home to his legally married husband, with who he will file joint tax forms.
The Senator married his husband Stephen in Salt Lake City in December 2013.
