Scottish MP Mhairi Black has spoken about the barriers she faces in politics.

Last year, Ms Black became the Member of Parliament for Paisley and Renfrewshire South aged just 20, when she defeated Labour Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander.

Now aged 21, the Scottish National Party politician spoke to the Guardian columnist Owen Jones about her experiences of Westminster.

She said: ā€œAll the things that I thought and argued during the referendum. and during the general election have unfortunately turned out to be totally true

ā€œIt is a complete boys club, totally.

ā€œIf you want to cover barriers into politics, I cover a lot of bases. Iā€™m young, female, gay, Iā€™m SNP ā€“ hardly the most popular down in Westminster!

ā€œBut even when Iā€™m there, Iā€™m taken aback by ā€“ in the first instance, how patronising some folk were, and in the second instance how sexist people were.

ā€œItā€™s subtle sexism, but it still exists. The arrogance and the ā€˜darlingsā€™ and the ā€˜oh donā€™t worry yourselfā€™ and all this rubbishā€¦ itā€™s so excluded from reality.

ā€œItā€™s unbelievable. Itā€™s a totally defunct institution that has to drag itself into the 21st century if it wants any hope of surviving.

ā€œIt allows tradition to rule over reasonā€¦ which is just ridiculous.ā€

The MP previously schooled a Twitter troll who branded her a ā€œgruff old lezzerā€ and misspelt her name.

She responded: ā€œItā€™s ā€˜Mhairiā€™. At least spell the name right when youā€™re insulting the gruff, rather young lesbian.ā€
