New York politician compares MMA to gay porn in bid to ban it
A New York assemblyman has compared mixed martial arts to gay porn, in a bid to keep a ban on the sport.
The New York State Assembly member, Daniel O’Donnell, is out as gay, and joked about the sport.
He said: “I thought I should learn a little bit about [MMA],” he said on Tuesday.
“Well, I should really like it. You have two nearly naked, hot men trying to dominate each other. That’s gay porn with a different ending.”
He went on to say that he wanted the sport to remain banned in the state.
New York is currently the only state which bans MMA.
But O’Donnell was the only dissenting member to argue against a bill which would allow organisations like UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), to hold events in New York.
He did joke that he would “take a cold shower”, and that he hoped the state would put a stop to the bill.
However the bill passed by 113-25.
Concerns about the bill included those about traumatic brain injuries.
