Businesses hit out at North Carolina’s ban on anti-discrimination law
A number of businesses have taken a stand against North Carolina, after it passed a bill that overturned an anti-discrimination bill.
American Airlines, Wells Fargo and a number of other companies hit out at legislation, signed into law by Governor Pat McCrory, last night that would overturn legislation to protect trans people.
The new bill will prevent cities and counties from enacting legislation that prevents discrimination and voided all existing non-discrimination laws.
Currently, trying to attract business to the state, a number of companies have said it will have the opposite effect.
American Airlines, which operates its second largest hub from Charlotte, said it was bad for the State’s economy.
“We believe no individual should be discriminated against because of gender identity or sexual orientation,” American Airlines spokeswoman Katie Cody said in a statement.
“Laws that allow such discrimination go against our fundamental belief of equality and are bad for the economies of the states in which they are enacted.”
Other companies that joined American Airlines were Apple and Microsoft, who signed a statement opposing anti LGBT legislation.
They said: “Corporate leaders are speaking out against bills that could allow individuals and businesses to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and other minorities – versions of which are actively being considered in states across the country. This proposed legislation is bad for business.”
Fellow software company, Red Hat, also attacked the bill as “a clear step backwards.
Charlotte Mayor, Jennifer Roberts. said the passage the of the bill was “bad”.
