7 holier-than-thou politicians involved in a sex scandal
A lot of politicians from the GOP have hit out at attacks on religious people and claimed that they’re doing the morally correct thing.
However, we’ve realised that where not one trans person has been charged or arrested with a sexual offence by using their identified bathroom (despite a number of state’s passing laws anyway) there has been quite a few sex scandals from within the Republican Party.
Here’s a look at just a few of them.
1. Larry Craig
The former Republican Senator served in the US Senate for 18 years and was in favour or the Federal Marriage Amendment, as well as opposing gay rights more generally.
He was arrested in 2007 for trying to have sex with an undercover male police officer in Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport.
2. Edward Shrock
During his time in Congress he opposed anything that was gay. That included everything from same-sex marriage to repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’.
However, in 2004, during a campaign for a third term he was forced to drop out of the race because a video emerged of him trying to solicit sex from a gay prostitute.
3. Bob Allen
As a member of the Florida House of Representatives, he had a voting record that sided with the Christian Coalition – an anti-gay group that promote discrimination against LGBT people.
Yet, in 2007 he stole headlines because he offered an undercover male police officer oral sex in exchange for $20.
4. Bruce Barkley
The Pennsylvania County Commissioner was accused of raping a 20-year-old man in 2008. Although those allegations turned out to be false, during a search of his house, police uncovered hundreds of videos of him engaging in sexual activity with male prostitutes.
He later admitted to taping as many as 500 encounters, all of which were done without the consent of men in the video.
5. Todd Courser
The former Michigan House of Representatives member and Tea Party advocate was forced from the House after he tried to cover up an affair with a Republican colleague, Cindy Gamrat, by saying he was sleeping with a rentboy.
A newspaper uncovered the scandal after exposing a recording and now the politician is to face perjury charges in Michigan.
6. Josh Duggar
An advocate for the Family Research Council, Josh Duggar admitted sexually abusing some of his younger sisters.
Part of the family that made the TLC programme, 19 Kids and Counting, the show was cancelled after the allegations became public. In August 2015, he also admitted to being a member of the Ashley Madison website that promotes adultery.
Former presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, defended his actions as “forgivable”.
7. Philip Hinkle
A state representative from Indiana who voted for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as being between a man and a woman was caught trying to bribe a 18-year-old man for sexual favours.
He was quoted in a local newspaper as saying to the young man that he was after “a couple hours of your time tonight” and offered him $50 or $60 up front for a “really good time”.
So, next time you hear someone say that trans people using the bathroom of the gender they identify with is wrong. Remind them of who the bigger threat is!
