First Dates star lied about homophobic attack ‘for attention’
Daniel May has admitted faking a homophobic attack in order to gain publicity.
A former First Dates guest has admitted to lying about a homophobic attack in order to “become famous.”
“Yes, it was a lie,” he told Guys Like U magazine.
May previously claimed that he was minutes away from home when he was assaulted by two men.
He claimed they asked him if he was “that faggot that’s on TV,” before the men physically attacked him.
May quickly shared images of the attack on social media, before being interviewed by several publications regarding his claims.
The reality TV wannabe initially caught the public’s attention after making a series of controversial comments during his appearance on the popular Channel 4 dating show.
May faced backlash after claiming he would not “walk down the street with someone that wears high heels,” before criticising camp men.
Despite the negative reaction he received, May says the attention fuelled his ambition to retain his newfound “fame”.
“Unfortunately after my appearance on First Dates two things happened,” he told the magazine.
“One, I started to get loads of attention and I had lots of agents and management companies offering me large sums of money and stupidly I got sucked in fast.
“Before I knew it, people had convinced me these kind of stories get you noticed and was told that all celebrities do it,” he explained.
“The next thing I was in OK Mag, Cosmopolitan, Heat, Daily Mirror and so on. There was no going back and I was deep in a very slippery road.”
However, May says he is “not blaming anyone apart from myself, as we have to take responsibility for our own actions in life.
“I just regret I didn’t surround myself with the right people for advice.”
I know this might sound stupid but in my head I actually had a plan, get noticed and then make a difference but now I understand I went about it the wrong way.
May went on to reveal that he is now undergoing therapy, after being diagnosed with bipolar.
First Dates airs Tuesday at 10pm on Channel 4.
