‘Uber for birth control’ launches PrEP delivery service
A company which has been dubbed the ‘Uber for birth control’ has launched a new service which delivers HIV-preventing drugs to a recipient’s door.
Nurx, a startup which started in December, serves New York City and San Francisco.
Initially launched to remove the embarrassment or awkwardness related to going to a doctor to ask for birth control, now Nurx has now expanded its service to include PrEP.
Nurx allows users to request medication, submit insurance information, get a prescription from a doctor, and have the meds delivered to their door by messenger.
The idea behind expanding to include PrEP is to avoid a potentially lengthy process of attending doctors’ offices in order to get a prescription for PrEP.
Truvada as PrEP has shown to dramatically reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
Hans Gangeskar and A. Edvard Engesæth, the founders of Nurx, estimate that using their own doctors could mean they would have to wait up to nine months before they actually get their medication.
“These are things that people feel uncomfortable talking to anyone about, even a doctor,” Gangeskar told the Washington Post.
Nurx has around 2,500 members, but is seeing dramatic growth each week.
