Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein join Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Kinky Boots creators were honoured with their own stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame over the weekend.
Pop icon Cyndi Lauper and acting legend Harvey Fierstein gained much-deserved stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this weekend
The Kinky Boots collaborators marked the occasion with series of fun photographs outside Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, where the show is due to open this week.
“What an honour!” Lauper wrote on Instagram after the ceremony.
The singer is well-known for her charity work with the LGBT community, opening a series of homeless shelters for gay and trans people across New York City.
In 2012, she launched The Forty to None Project aimed at empowering and advocating on behalf of homeless LGBT youth, and raising awareness of the problems they face.
Meanwhile, legendary gay actor-playwright Harvey Fierstein recently spoke out against Donald Trump and the growing movement against him.
“With every racist slight, with every homophobic slander, with every manufactured semi-automatic weapon and oil spill and fracking disaster and shuttered women’s clinic and attack on affordable health care, the Republican leadership built this Frankenstein monster,” he said.
“Let the monster they created and nurtured destroy them!”
Marissa Jaret Winokur – his co-star in the Broadway production of Hairspray – paid tribute to a man she says has “changed the world”.
“I wish I could tell the 16 year old Harvey about his future,” she said.
“That one day he would be so beloved that they would give him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What that would have done for a teenager.
“However I believe that even 16 year old Harvey would be more excited and impressed to know the impact he has had on the world because he has truly changed the world simply by being himself.”
Fierstein wrote the book for Kinky Boots and Lauper wrote the score.
The pair also had reason to celebrate last week, after a musical she penned won big at the Olivier Awards.
Kinky Boots won Best New Musical, with Matt Henry picking up the award for Best Actor in a Musical.
