A young man struggling to come out as gay has found an unlikely source of support in the shape of the superstar.

A gay man ā€“ who wishes to remain anonymous ā€“ has allegedly been supported while coming out by his icon, Rihanna.

The man shared a direct message he shared with the star in which he told her about his struggles.

To his surprise, she replied, telling him: ā€œItā€™s okay to be scared, but itā€™s more important to be who you are!ā€

After the man began to tell his friends he was gay, he shared their reaction with the singer and their conversation continued, with Rihanna sending a series of heartfelt replies.

Her latest message reads: ā€œIā€™m so proud of you! Iā€™m glad to see you finally happy with yourself!!

ā€œBeing who you are is the only way.ā€

The fan told BuzzFeed that he initially reached out to Rihanna about a month ago, and without her he would never have had the courage to terms with his sexuality.

He went on to say itā€™s been hard for him to come out as a gay black man, but Rihannaā€™s messages have helped him realise that he shouldnā€™t be ashamed of who he is.

The fan hopes to be fully out of the closet by July when heā€™ll be meeting Rihanna for the first time during her Anti world tour.

Last year, the star spoke out against Indianaā€™s controversial ā€˜religious freedomā€™ law that allowed businesses to refuse to serve gay people.

The ā€˜S&Mā€™ singer was performing in Indianapolis as part of the NCAA March Madness Music Fest when she spoke out against the law.

Referring to the stateā€™s new RFRA between songs, Rihanna said: ā€œWhoā€™s feeling these new bulls**t laws that theyā€™re trying to pass over here?

ā€œI say f**k that s**tā€¦ weā€™re just living our motherf***ing lives, Indiana!ā€

The singer also got the crowd to chant: ā€œf**k that s**tā€.
