Mom misses point of bills to protect trans people, dresses up as a pirate… for some reason
In a bizarre show of ignorance, a mother from Washington has posted a photo of herself in various costumes to prove that… well we’re not quite sure what her point is.
Kristi Merritt was responding to anti-LGBT “religious freedom” bills passed in Mississippi and North Carolina.
The latter state’s bill actually rolled back a local ordinance protecting the right of trans people to use a gender-appropriate bathroom.
Merritt’s Facebook misgendered trans people, claiming that trans women are “men in dresses”.
In the original post, which was shared over 30,000 times, she wrote: “A man in women’s clothes does not make him a woman. Men should not get to be in our bathrooms or lockers!”
She dresses up as football player Russell Wilson, poses with a sign that reads: “Does this make me Russell Wilson?”.
Then does the same with a (offensively stereotyping) ‘Mexican’ costume.
After she puts on a pirate costume, Merritt asks: “Does this make me a pirate?”
This is what she ends with, showing that she clearly doesn’t know anything about the issue she is addressing.
Of course the gesture has been celebrated as “extremely sassy”, and a really clever way of making a point… by others who also have no idea what they’re talking about.
