Hilarious SNL skit takes aim at baker who won’t make gay wedding cake
Saturday Night Live is taking aim at good honest Christian bakers who claim that God won’t let them serve gay wedding cakes.
A number of cases have sprung up in the past few years surrounding such ‘Christian’ bakers – with Texas baker Edie Delorme of Kerns Bake Shop becoming the latest to refuse to make cakes for a “homosexual marriage”.
SNL released a fake film trailer mocking the bakers, who have become a cause célèbre among the anti-LGBT religious right, by showing things from their point of view.
In the parody clip, a nice innocent baker is minding her own business when two evil gays come in and force her to “spit in the face of God” by making the cake.
When she refuses, the pair then hire a “Jewish lawyer” – who insists that she publicly affirm that God is gay in order to drop the case.
However, she finds an ally in her state’s conservative Governor, who decides to help pass a religious freedom law so she can deny goods and basic services to gay people.
He’s grappling with running the “poorest state in the country, second in obesity, third in teen pregnancy” – but upon hearing the baker’s case, decides “this is the priority now”.
Anti-gay bakers Melissa and Aaron Klein, of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, raised $400,000 from evangelicals after refusing to serve a gay couple – but then insisted they were too destitute to pay a fine.
