Emma Stone and Demi Moore accidentally joined an extreme anti-gay political party
Emma Stone and Demi More are among the thousands of Californians who have joined a far-right political party by mistake.
The ‘American Independent Party’ is the third-largest party in California – but probably not through its merits.
Voter registration forms in the state allow people to check a box to register to a party – including the Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, AIP, or no affiliation.
However, the ‘Independent’ in the AIP’s name has led its box to be checked by hundreds of thousands of people who believed they were declaring themselves to be independents.
Unfortunately, that’s not quite what the AIP believes – and it is instead a break-off from the far-right Constitution Party that rallies against “liberalism”, vows to clamp down on “illegals”, and is avidly anti-gay marriage.
The group’s platform states: “We insist that marriage is between a man and a woman and assert the role of the law in establishing and reinforcing the mutual rights and obligations of that God-ordained contract.”
The LA Times canvassed the group’s supporters and found that 73 percent of them were independents – and a majority of them were completely unaware they had joined any party at all.
Actresses Demi Moore and Emma Stone, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, and The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco are among those listed as ‘members’.
But they have since come out to disavow all links to the group.
A spokesperson for Moore said: “Demi Moore is not, nor has ever been, a member of the American Independent Party. Any record that states otherwise is a mistake.”
Cuoco said: “The views of this party do not accurately reflect my personal beliefs and I am not affiliated with any political party.
“As such, I am taking the necessary steps to immediately remove my name as a member of this voting party.”
Reps for Ms Stone and Sugar Ray Leanord also said they would redo their voter registration to disaffiliate from the group.
