Whole Foods counter-sues ‘lying’ gay pastor over ‘homophobic’ cake
The supermarket chain has accused Pastor Jordan Brown harassment.
Pastor Jordan Brown filed a lawsuit for “intentional infliction of emotional distress” against Whole Foods, after a cake he ordered allegedly arrived with the phrase “Love Wins Fag” written on it.
He says he grew suspicious after the girl who served him laughed when he made his order, but did not see what was written on the cake until he arrived home.
In its counter-suit, Whole Foods is seeking at least $100,000 in damages from Brown and his attorney, Austin Kaplan.
The company states that the original complaint is “groundless, brought in bad faith, and intended for the sole purpose of harassment.”
Before announcing its plans, Whole Foods issued a statement denying the pastor’s claims, before defending the team member who made the cake.
“The team member wrote ‘Love Wins’ at the top of the cake as requested by the guest and that’s exactly how the cake was packaged and sold at the store,” the statement read.
“Our team members do not accept or design bakery orders that include language or images that are offensive.
“Whole Foods Market has a zero tolerance policy for discrimination.”
The company has also spoken to BuzzFeed News, asserting that the allegations are not true.
The company says it will support its employees who are embroiled in this incident, and has further revealed that the staff who was in charge of Brown’s cake decorations is part of the LGBT community:
“We stand behind our bakery team member, who is part of the LGBT community, and the additional team members from the store, who confirmed the cake was decorated with only the message ‘Love Wins’.”
In response to claims that Brown himself doctored the cake, his lawyer claimed that his client is “not a cake baker, he’s not much of a cook and he doesn’t have blue icing in his house”.
