WATCH: Are gay men actually more masculine than straight men?
A new video explores the true meaning of the word ‘masculinity’.
A new video from popular YouTube science channel, ASAPScience, aims to explore what it really means to be masculine.
The star of the video, Greg, argues that masculinity is based on men seeking approval from other men, meaning that gay may in fact be ‘hyper-masculine’.
“[Masculinity is] about the acceptance and approval from other men,” he says in the clip.
“And since gay men for a variety of reasons are constantly looking for validation and approval from other men, does that mean that gay men are essentially more masculine?”
Later in video, Greg addressees homophobia, claiming that it is in fact a sexist concept.
“Gay men also have to deal with homophobia, which is directly linked to gay men being more feminine,” he explains.
“Homophobia is so much more than the irrational fear of gay people. Calling someone gay or a fag is another way of calling them more feminine, or sissy, or inferior.
“And so yes, homophobia is sexism.”
In 2013, a study found that there are physical facial differences between gay and straight men, and that gay men actually rank as typically more masculine.
The findings were made at the Centre for Theoretical Study at Charles University, Prague, and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
The data indicated that the faces of gay men were consistently ranked as more masculine than those of straight men.
