Two prom queens is ‘not fair on the boys’
A California high school has refused to allow a lesbian couple to become prom queens because they said it’s “not fair on the boys”.
Haley Lack and her girlfriend were nominated by their peers to become prom king and queen, alongside two hetrosexual couples, at Foothill High School, Palo Cedro.
However, the school refused to accept the nomination, as it said it’s not fair on male students.
The disagreement has caused a backlash among students, who think the school is taking the wrong decision.
“The students and myself believe that there was equal opportunity for both males and females because every senior had the ability to be nominated,” 16-year-old Haley said.
“We are asking for anyone, regardless of gender, to be able to win king or queen. With that, they would have equal opportunity.”
A petition has now been launched that has gained support from other schools in the area. The ‘Equality for Same Sex Couples at Foothill High School’ has already received over 100 signatures.
Responding to the petition, the principal of the school, Jim Bartow, said: “They [sic: the girls] are both able to run separately, but we don’t nominate as couples.”
Although he said he wasn’t against their relationship, he added, “it’s not fair to the boy gender”.
Haley added that even if she was to run with her girlfriend, there would still be two other boys on the ballot.
She said: “It is by popular vote of the student body, if they vote to have two girls for king and queen, then how is that not equal? The boys had an equal opportunity to win.”
The girls aren’t the only gay couple to have run into this problem recently, with a young lesbian couple at Niwot High School in Boulder County, Colorado being told that they could not be named prom junior princesses despite winning the vote in a landslide.
