Gay man violently assaulted in Brighton uses attack to highlight homophobia
Dain Luka hopes to highlight the homophobia that led to him and his partner being attacked by a gang of thugs.
A gay man who was violently assaulted in Brighton says he is overwhelmed and appreciative after receiving thousands of supportive messages following the attack.
Dain Luka sustained fractured bones in his face and may have lost the vision in his left eye after he and his boyfriend were beaten by a gang of homophobic assailants.
Luka took to Facebook to let his loved ones know that he had been released from hospital, before sharing details of the shocking incident.
“Two guys decided to shout homophobic comments as we were walking home,” he wrote.
“Doing the sensible thing and ignoring it they decided to jump us and kick us in the face.
Although he did not know his attackers, Luka went on to thank passers by who stopped the attack and calling the police.
Describing his injuries, he said his “eyes are full of blood and I’ve fractured all the bones in my face.
“I should find out in the next few days if I’m going to get my vision back in my left eye.
Luka added that he “felt pretty lucky going through life not experiencing homophobia and for it to happen in Brighton just goes to show that people still can’t be accepting of others.
“No one should ever experience being discriminated against no matter what their life choices are.”
The post has so far received over 16,000 likes and has been shared nearly 9,000 times.
Echoing his earlier statements, Luka attempted to highlight the homophobia that still exists in society, as he thanked users for their “overwhelming” support yesterday.
“Thank you for all the support guys, it’s been overwhelming and much appreciated,” he wrote.
“If you could share my previous post and help raise awareness of this issue that’s still present in today’s society.”
Ending on a positive note, Luka said that although “something bad has happened”, he is “feeling positive and want only good to come out of this.”
