Transparent wins at Baftas as London Spy leaves empty-handed
Transparent won the International Award, but Ben Whishaw failed to scoop best actor.
The second series of popular US drama Transparent won a gong at this year’s Bafta Awards.
The Amazon series – which recently added Caitlyn Jenner to its cast – picked up the International award beating The Good Wife, Narcos and Spinal.
Last night’s win follows the programme’s previous success at the Emmys – where it picked up two awards.
The show also won big at the Screen Actors Guild awards in January – with star Jeffrey Tambor winning the gong for best actor.
The esteemed actor plays transgender woman Maura Pfefferman on the show, as she transitions later in life and deals with her large, dysfunctional family.
However, not everyone was so lucky on the night, with highly acclaimed London Spy, starring Ben Whishaw, missing out on two awards.
The show – written by Tom Rob Smith – was pipped to the most by the Shane Meadow’s masterpiece, This Is England ’90, which won the Mini Series award for Channel 4.
Whishaw also lost out the Best Actor Award, which was won by Wolf Hall star Mark Rylance. The pair also face off against Stephen Graham and Idris Elba.
London Spy told the story of Danny, who is dragged into the world of espionage following the murder of his enigmatic boyfriend.
Whishaw – who already has a Bafta win under his belt – played Danny in the series, described as “beautifully written”, by a BBC drama commissioner.
The show won positive reviews from critics and viewers alike – with Whishaw’s portrayal receiving particular praise.
