Lady Gaga will NOT play Cilla Black in Dionne Warwick biopic after all
Lady Gaga has denied she is officially part of the project, despite the news having been announced at a press conference.
Lady Gaga will apparently not be playing Cilla Black in an upcoming Dionne Warwick biopic, despite earlier reports to the contrary from Warwick herself.
According to Variety, the singer’s publicist said: “Lady Gaga is not attached and will not appear in the project.
“Reports of Gaga starring in the project are false.”
However, Warwick herself is still claiming Gaga will play the late Merseyside legend.
“It is just a question of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing,” Warwick told The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m waiting now for an email from either her and or management letting me know that all the retractions that have been tracted will be retracted.”
The upcoming film is based on the of I Say a Little Prayer singer’s autobiography, covering the early period in her career in the 1960s.
Former Destiny’s Child singer LeToya Luckett has signed up to play Warwick – but the casting of Lady Gaga as her music rival Cilla Black was the one that took fans by surprise.
Black – who passed away last year – had a glittering music career in the ’60s.
She also shared a record label with Warwick – which led to clashes between the pair as they were frequently working from the same pool of songs.
Warwick accused Black of “whitening up” soul and “stealing my music”.
“I honestly believe that if I’d sneezed on my next record, then Cilla would have sneezed on hers too,” she once said of her rival.
“There was no imagination in her recording.”
Speaking at a Cannes press conference, Warwick described the TV icon as her “nemesis”, but insisted they had repaired their relationship in later life.
