A couple invited the Obamas to their wedding and got this awesome response
A lesbian couple, who invited Barack and Michelle Obama to their wedding, were stunned to receive a personalised reply.
Chelsea Roden and Lisa Hirschpek had a few wedding invitations left over after sending them out to all their family and friends. Instead of binning them, the couple thought it would be nice to invite the Obamas who have spoken out in favour and supported same-sex marriage since 2013.
Chelsea, who is from the States, and her partner Lisa, from Germany, met in 2011 and at the time they said that because they lived in different countries, marraige was the last thing on their minds.
However, as their relationship grew and the equal marriage debate intensified, they started to discuss it more.
“I had a lot of government on my mind … and was feeling super thankful for all the changes in our country that makes our international same-sex marriage even possible,” Chelsea told A-Plus.
“When we started dating in 2011, marriage was the last thing on our minds – partially because we were 18 and living in different countries, but also because the idea of same-sex marriage was still so new.”
Not expecting a reply, Chelsea said the invitation included a handwritten note thanking the first couple for the work they have done for the LGBT community.
Months later, Chelsea received a letter in the post addressed to her and her partner, Lisa, from the White House.
The letter read: “Congratulations to you on your wedding day. May this special time be blessed with love, laughter, and happiness. We wish you all the best as you embark on your journey together, and we hope your bond grows stronger with each passing year.”
It was then signed by both the President and First Lady.
Chelsea added: “It’s a really sweet thing to have. I said we should definitely frame it or put it in a scrapbook, and joked – ‘or our visa paperwork!’”
The couple are now looking forward to getting married and for America to accept LGBT families.
Earlier this year, the President said that equal marraige coming to all 50 states was one of his favourite moments of 2015.
He also instructed schools this month to allow trans kids to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity.
