Could this drag queen actually be the next Governor of Alabama?
A drag queen has threatened to run for Governor of Alabama – to block the state’s notoriously anti-gay Chief Justice Roy Moore.
The chief justice in Alabama, Roy Moore, was indefinitely suspended this year by the Judicial Inquiry Commission due to his conduct to block equal marriage.
The avowed Republican had intervened after the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of equal marriage last summer – instructed probate judges to ignore the ruling, in a brazen attempt to re-ban gay weddings.
He declared the Supreme Court ruling “doesn’t apply” in Alabama, but was later smacked down by a federal judge who clarified that the probate judges could not just ignore the ruling by the highest court in America.
The justice – who “flagrantly disregarded and abused his authority” to pursue his own vendetta on the issue – has hinted he will run for Governor in 2018.
But drag queen and LGBT rights activist Ambrosia Starling, who Moore has repeatedly mocked for being involved in protests against him, has threatened to run to block him
The drag artist told SiriusXM: “Oh what a fool you are! You have decided, like every other bully in my life, to pick on the weakest kid in the room. And I have a pretty good batting average in that arena.”
She said: “When the idea was first thrown at me to run for office in the state of Alabama, at first I laughed.
“And then I said, ‘Well wouldn’t that be something? That it finally takes a drag queen to straighten out the circus of politics’ If it takes a drag queen to get everyone to face the front, same direction, and listening, I’ll do that.”
Starling has the backing of MSNBC host Rachel Maddow – who noted the people in Alabama’s three most senior roles – Governor, Speaker and Chief Justice – were all embroiled in scandals.
Maddow said: “Alabama is falling apart! As far as I’m concerned, Ambrosia Starling could have her pick of the three.”
