This is how many same-sex couples have tied the knot in Ireland so far
It’s a year on from Ireland’s landmark referendum on same-sex marriage – and hundreds of couples have tied the knot so far.
In May 2015, the Irish public overwhelmingly voted to bring in equal marriage – with 62% of voters backing equality, and just 38% against despite strong lobbying from the Catholic Church in the country.
Weddings began in Ireland in November – and six months on, the country’s Department of Social Protection released figures for the first weddings.
Here’s how many couples have tied the knot so far:
Dublin made up just over half the marriages, with 213 out of the 412 total.
Cork saw 43 marriages, while there were 25 in Limerick, 17 in Wicklow.
Galway, Kildare, Donegal, Wexford, Carlow, Leitrim and Monaghan all had one marriage registered.
County Clare is the only region to see no registered same-sex weddings yet.
Meanwhile, equality continues to be blocked in Northern Ireland – where the Democratic Unionist Party has used ‘Petitions of Concern’ to override a majority on the issue, blocking all progress.
