Gillian Anderson to be the next James Bond?
The X Files actress tweeted a mock up of herself playing the legendary secret agent.
Ever since Daniel Craig announced he was stepping down as 007, (despite being offered a whopping £68million to stay) speculation has been rife about who may replace him in the iconic role.
Tom Hiddleston, Damien Lewis, Aidan Turner and Tom Hardy are all thought to be gunning for the role, with Idris Elba rumoured to become the first black actor to play the womanising spy.
However, actress Gillian Anderson has thrown a new name into the mix last week… her own.
The actress tweeted a potential Bond poster – with her as the star – after fans began to get behind the idea on Twitter.
“It’s Bond. Jane Bond,” The X Files star wrote.
“Thanks for all the votes! (And sorry, don’t know who made poster but I love it!)”
Despite the excitement, Anderson – who recently discussed her relationship with a woman – may be up against some harsh critics if she is ever to win the role, after a host of ex-Bonds revealed they were strongly opposed to the idea of a woman ever playing 007.
Pierce Brosnan – who played the iconic spy from 1995’s GoldenEye to 2002’s Die Another Day – caused a storm when he said the role could be portrayed as gay or bisexual, despite being against the idea of a female Bond.
“James Bond is a guy, he’s all male. His name is James, his name is James Bond,” he said.
His sentiments were echoed by classic Bond Sir Roger Moore, who is against the character being portrayed as anything other than a heterosexual, white male.
“I have heard people talk about how there should be a lady Bond or a gay Bond,” he said.
“But they wouldn’t be Bond for the simple reason that wasn’t what Ian Fleming wrote.”
Luckily, current Bond Craig could not disagree with his predecessors more.
“Anything’s possible. You can do anything as long as it’s credible and it works. It doesn’t matter.”
