Stephen Amell says fan asked him to ‘out’ Arrow co-star Colton Haynes
The actor says that he contacted his co-star after being quizzed over Haynes’ sexuality.
Arrow star Stephen Amell has spoken of his support for Colton Haynes, as he described the difficult moment a fan tried to get him to “out” his co-star.
Haynes opened up about his sexuality in an interview earlier this month, saying that he is now “happier than he’s ever been” – after he was questioned on Tumblr about his “secret gay past” back in January.
“I’m so happy for Colton,” Amell told E! when asked about his co-star.
However, he went on to describe an awkward encounter a few months ago, during which a fan of the show attempted to “bait” Amell in to outing his friend.
“A fan three or four months ago at a Comic-Con convention basically tried to bait me into outing him.
“I got in touch with [Colton] and was like, ‘Hey, man, this happened [and] I didn’t know what to say. I simply deflected and we moved on.’
“He emailed me back and said, ‘You know, I really appreciate that and I’ve recently made some decisions over the past few months and I’m excited about what’s in the future.’”
Amell said that he too is “excited” for Haynes and is happy that he can finally be himself.
“As long as he is living his best life and he is at his most happy, because that is stuff that I’ve seen him struggle with,” he added.
During the interview earlier this month, Haynes also opened up about living with “terminal anxiety”.
He explained that he has suffered from anxiety problems his whole life and attributed the condition to his breaks from Teen Wolf and Arrow.
However, Amell says that Haynes would be welcomed back by the Arrow team anytime.
“All he has to do is basically show up and we’ll write him in,” he promised.
