Olly Alexander mocks music shop after Years & Years album appears in ‘gay’ section
The frontman took offence after a fan tweeted an image of the album to the band.
Olly Alexander has spoken out after his band’s album was pictured residing in a music store’s gay section.
The openly gay singer shared a photo sent to him by a fan showing Years & Years’ album Communion stocked in a section which labelled ‘Gay’.
“If you think my music is gay that’s cool, I love being gay and I love my gay music but can you really label a sound or style of music ‘gay’,” he wrote on Twitter.
Alexander then embarked on a series of tweets mocking how certain music and/or things were “gay”, even uploading a picture of himself heading to the recording studio.
A number of other high-profile musicians also got involved with Youtuber Troye Sivan, whose album also appeared in the ‘gay’ section in the photo, writing “I love saying I love being gay”.
The ‘Shine’ singer has been vocal about the need for gay role models, recently releasing a music video celebrating sexuality.
In March, the 25-year-old revealed that growing up in a “straight world” caused him to suffer from anxiety and depression.
He continues to win praise for his frank and open approach to sexuality, and his willingness to help young fans come to terms with their own identity.
The singer also spoke out last month against homophobic abuse on Twitter.
He said: “[I get] the usual stuff – sometimes it’s homophobic, like gay hate.
“But I don’t understand why people ‘@’ me on Twitter to say ‘Olly Alexander can’t sing’ or ‘Olly Alexander, you’re ugly as f**k’.
