Olly Alexander mocks music shop after Years & Years album appears in ‘gay’ section
The frontman took offence after a fan tweeted an image of the album to the band.
Olly Alexander has spoken out after his bandās album was pictured residing in a music storeās gay section.
The openly gay singer shared a photo sent to him by a fan showing Years & Yearsā album Communion stocked in a section which labelled āGayā.
āIf you think my music is gay thatās cool, I love being gay and I love my gay music but can you really label a sound or style of music āgayā,ā he wrote on Twitter.
Alexander then embarked on a series of tweets mocking how certain music and/or things were āgayā, even uploading a picture of himself heading to the recording studio.
A number of other high-profile musicians also got involved with Youtuber Troye Sivan, whose album also appeared in the āgayā section in the photo, writing āI love saying I love being gayā.
The āShineā singer has been vocal about the need for gay role models, recently releasing a music video celebrating sexuality.
In March, the 25-year-old revealed that growing up in a āstraight worldā caused him to suffer from anxiety and depression.
He continues to win praise for his frank and open approach to sexuality, and his willingness to help young fans come to terms with their own identity.
The singer also spoke out last month against homophobic abuse on Twitter.
He said: ā[I get] the usual stuff ā sometimes itās homophobic, like gay hate.
āBut I donāt understand why people ā@ā me on Twitter to say āOlly Alexander canāt singā or āOlly Alexander, youāre ugly as f**kā.
