Canadian PM flies the Pride flag from Parliament Hill
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has flown the Pride flag from Parliament Hill for the first time.
Prime Minister Trudeau – who came to power in Canada last year – Ā has put equality at the heart of his leadership: championing LGBT rights and feminism, appointing a diverse, expert-led gender-balanced cabinet, speaking out against homophobia, and making history by marching at Pride.
He also recentlyĀ announced a raft of new trans rights protections, thatĀ will bolster anti-discrimination protections on the grounds of gender identity, and will also protect trans people underĀ hate speech laws.
Yesterday, the leader joined with MPs from across the political spectrum to mark the start of Pride Month – by raisingĀ the rainbow flag from the top ofĀ Ottawa’s historic Parliament Hill.
It is the first time that the pride flag has been flown from the Hill.
Prime Minister TrudeauĀ told the crowd: “This is a great day for Canada and it is part of a long series of milestones this country has hit over the years.
“It hasnāt been easy, it hasnāt been automatic. A lot of people fought for a long time for this day and for the many days that led up to this day to happen.”
He wrote on Facebook: “Raising the Pride Flag on Parliament Hill for the first time in Canadian history. June 1, 2016.”
Trudeau plans toĀ attend this yearās Pride parade in TorontoĀ tomorrowĀ ā making him the first Canadian PM to do so.
Though it will be his first time attending in his newĀ capacity, Mr Trudeau has attended Pride in the past a number of times as an opposition MP.
