ACLU civil liberties exec quits because she opposes trans rights laws
The Director of the Georgia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has resigned – because she opposes trans rights.
The ACLU has taken a lead on LGBT rights issues in recent years, helping to bring discrimination cases in a number of states.
However, the head of the ACLU in Georgia – Maya Dillard Smith – opted to resign this week after the organisation took a more active role in lobbying for trans rights.
She said: “I found myself principally and philosophically unaligned with the organization.
“I understood it to be the ACLU’s goal to delicately balance competing rights to ensure that any infringements are narrowly tailored, that they do not create a hierarchy of rights, and that we are mindful of unintended consequences.”
Dallard says she can’t support the ACLU’s stance on trans people because they frighten her children.
She wrote: “I have shared my personal experience of having taken my elementary school age daughters into a women’s restroom when shortly after three transgender young adults, over six feet with deep voices, entered.
“My children were visibly frightened, concerned about their safety and left asking lots of questions for which I, like many parents, was ill-prepared to answer.”
Interestingly, while recounting the story to Fox News, Dallard said just one of her daughters was present during the alleged incident… while in her statement, she suggests all three all of them were there.
Ms Dallard insists: “I believe there are solutions that can provide accommodations for transgender people and balance the need to ensure women and girls are safe from those who might have malicious intent.”
However, she told Fox she has wider issues with the ACLU on broader LGBT rights issues, referring to ‘religious refusal’ bills.
