Trans girl explains how she overcame vicious bullying to be her true self
A transgender 14-year-old has shared her heartbreaking story as part of an anti-bullying project.
Transgender teen Corey Maison took part in the campaign as part of The Bully Project – releasing a video using the band High Dive Heart’s song Misfit.
She recalled: “I might look happy now, but I haven’t always been. I’ve known I was different all my life.
“When I was little I loved to play with dolls and play dress-up.
“I loved painting my nails too. Wearing my mum’s high heels was my favourite!
“But only in the house and NEVER outside.”
“I never had many friends. I didn’t fit in with the girls and the boys made fun of me. In 5th Grade I was bullied so bad, almost every day I came home from school crying.
“They would make up lies to try to get me in trouble. One of the kids told me I should kill myself because no one liked me anyway. He told me no one would miss me if I was dead. They were so mean, I just wanted to die.”
Corey’s parents agreed to pull her out of school and homeschool her, and away from the bullies she finally found the freedom to be herself.
She started dressing up outside of the house, and eventually realised she was transgender after watching a documentary about trans teen Jazz Jennings.
Corey was finally able to be herself, learning how to do her make-up and living as a girl full-time. Her parents took her to trans specialist doctors, and she was prescribed hormones aged 14 to go through puberty as a girl.
Best of all, she has finally made her way back to school – after her parents tracked down a small local school that is totally LGBT-inclusive.
