Nursing student’s heroic actions save man’s life during Orlando attack
Joshua McGill came across another man who had been shot multiple times as he tried to escape the chaos.
A nursing student has describe the moment he rescued another man who was injured during the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Joshua McGill – who studies nursing at Valencia College – was trying to escape the nightclub when he came across another man who had been shot.
McGill said that he was hiding under a car in the car park when he heard someone making noises.
He then found a man – who he knew only as Rodney – who had been shot in both arms and his back.
Rather than put his own safety first, McGill used his shirt as a makeshift tourniquet in an attempt to stop the bleeding as he comforted the man.
As soon as the coast was clear, McGill carried Rodney across the street to the safety of police officers.
Both of them were then sent to a nearby hospital in a police car with McGill continuing to apply pressure to Rodney’s wounds throughout the ride.
“Words cannot and will not describe the feeling of that,” the student wrote on Facebook later.
“Being covered in blood. Trying to save a guys life that I don’t even know regardless that I’m fine.. just traumatised.
“The things I had to say to the guy and make promises I didn’t know I would be able to keep or not to keep him conscious while holding him as tight as I could and blood everywhere on me.
“Saying a prayer for him and letting him know I will be here waiting for him. It sucks because all I got was his name and I can’t even see if he’s okay because I’m not related,” he pleaded.
“If anyone knows of a guy named Rodney that was shot and injured tonight. Please let me know he is okay.”
It is thought that the victim McGill helped was a man named Rodney Sumter, a dancer and bartender, whose friends and family reached out to thank the young nurse. He is reportedly in a stable condition in hospital.
