This man got a very moving obituary
A heartwarming obituary of an elderly Singaporean man has been circulating the web.
The obituary of Ong Peck Lye who died last week at 82 wrenches at the heart strings.
The first person poem lists off Ong’s family members, his flaws and his strengths, and apologises to each of his three sons.
The moving poem wasn’t written by Ong, but by his second son, Ong Tiong Yeow. The poem was written with inspiration being drawn from some of the final conversations the father and son had.
Each of Ong’s three sons were kicked out from there home after having altercations with their father. His youngest son, Ong Tiong Hou, was kicked out after coming out as gay to his parents. He now lives in America with his lifelong partner.
The poem lists Ong’s family members and their partners, and his youngest son’s partner is called ‘son-in-law’ – a touching gesture of acceptance from a family that have struggled with coming to terms with his sexuality.
“My sons, I wished they forgave me, as I forgave them for not forgiving me” the poem reads.
“I dared to live and now I dare to die”
Recent weeks have seen Singapore attacking the LGBT community. Foreign sponsors were banned from sponsoring events at Speaker’s Corner. This move directly effects the Pink Dot event, a celebration for LGBT people in Singapore.
The government came under fire for making the move to cut out a single same-sex kiss in Les Miserables.
The touching poem comes as the LGBT community mourns the loss of 49 people after a massacre in Orlando.
