HRC transforms headquarters into powerful eight-storey Orlando memorial
The Human Rights Campaign has converted its headquarters into a giant tribute to the victims of the Orlando massacre.
49 people were killed and 53 injured in the shocking terrorist hate crime attack over the weekend,which saw a gunman open fire inside The Pulse gay bar in Orlando, Florida.
With over 100 people dead or injured, it stands at the largest-scale shooting in US history.
Following the tragedy, towns and cities across the US and world have come together to show solidarity.
In Washington DC, the largest LGBT organisation in the US, the Human Rights Campaign, has transformed its entire building into a memorial.
A statement said: “Starting at dawn, HRC will begin hanging large-scale images of every victim in 49 windows of its building, looking out toward 17th St. Passersby will be invited to share on a remembrance board messages honoring the victims, and HRC will be handing out memorial programs with the photos, names and ages of the victims.
“The average age of the Orlando victims was 29. Almost every one of them was either Black or Latinx.
“They were all someone’s brother, mother, father, sister, daughter, family member and friend. They served in the military, worked at the local coffee shop, and brought joy to children’s lives at theme parks.
HRC Director of Communications Jay Brown said: “The victims were gunned down in a place they felt free to be themselves.
“They were the people we fight for every single day. In remembering their lives, we owe them boldness and strength and a show of force that cannot be ignored.”
The images will be displayed through early next week.
