The US senate rejected four gun control bills yesterday
The U.S senate has rejected a series of four gun control bills following one of the worst shootings in America.
Just nine days after the horrific massacre at Pulse nightclub which left 49 people dead and 53 injured, a bill for stricter gun control has been rejected.
Republican lawmakers in the U.S senate failed to pass any regulations against the sale of firearms.
Florida’s Senator, Bill Nelson said: “What am I going to tell the 49 grieving families? What am I going tell the families of those who are still in the hospital fighting for their lives? What am I going to tell the community of Orlando that is trying to come together in the healing? Sadly, what I’m going to have to tell them is the NRA won again.”
In response to the Republican’s blocking the gun amendments, Hillary Clinton said to PinkNews: “Enough.” She then listed all of the names of the victims of the Orlando massacre.
Four gun control bills, two of which were sponsored by the GOP, were killed on the Senate floor.
The first bill would have allowed the US Attorney General to deny a gun sale to anyone whom they have ‘reasonable belief’ of possibly engaging in terrorism. The ‘no-fly, no-buy’ amendment would have extended the current no-fly list.
The second bill would have closed the ‘gun show loophole’, meaning everyone would have to undergo a background check in every instance of buying a gun.
The republican and NRA supported bill proposed by Senator John Cornyn would have delayed someone on a watch list from buying a gun for three days.
The bill did not advance because Democrats argued that if the gun buyer was suspected of terrorism, they would already be under arrest.
The final bill would have funded an outside agency to do gun background checks, but would have made the appeal process easier.
Senate minority leader Harry Reid condemned the failure to take action. He said: “Instead of getting help from their elected officials, our constituents see a disturbing pattern of inaction.”
“It’s always the same. After each tragedy we try, we Democrats try to pass sensible gun safety measures. Sadly, our efforts are blocked by the Republicans in Congress who take their marching orders from the National Rifle Association.”
In the last 5 years, 100 gun control bills have been proposed to congress but none of the bills have passed.
