Can’t get to Pride? Don’t worry – Google has a solution
Google is doing something pretty cool for millions of people who might not be able to go to a Pride event in person.
For millions of people around the globe who can’t get to a Pride celebration this Pride Month, Google has unveiled #Prideforeveryone.
A virtual experience allowing users to tune into various Pride events is designed to be viewed on YouTube 360 and Google Cardboard using a smartphone.
It features Pride events across 25 countries including Brussels, Tel Aviv, Sao Paolo and Sydney.
According to Pew Research Center polling, more than half of LGBT+ people have not been to a Pride event.
“We are bringing Pride to millions of people who can march in a virtual way and be part of it all,” said Arjan Dijk, Google’s vice president of growth marketing.
“This year we gave it a lot of thought how we bring Pride to people who can’t physically not attend or are not really that comfortable in attending Pride,” he continued.”We are bringing Pride to millions of people who can march in a virtual way and be part of it all.”
The messaging behind the #Prideforeveryone campaign is ‘Be who you are. Love who you love.’
“When you are at Pride, you get this sense of excitement and this sense of a community coming together,” Dijk said. “What we are aiming to do is bring this sense of excitement and this sense of community to people who normally would not be able to get to do that.”
He added that Pride was important this year due to the shooting in Orlando which left 49 people dead and 53 injured at a gay club.
“I do think after Orlando this message is even more relevant, that people should be proud of who they are and who they love and Google as a company fully supports that,” Dijk added. “In light of Orlando, it’s very important that we celebrate life.”
