Vile homophobic stickers appear in Scotland: ‘No tolerance’ for gay sex
Stickers with racist and homophobic messages have been found on lampposts in Glasgow.
Some of the stickers say “White Zone”, while others warn of ‘zero tolerance’ for gay sex, drugs and communism,
The stickers were plastered around Glasgow Green and near the Clyde in the centre of the city.
A Scottish Green Party activist was the first to bring the offensive stickers to light when he posted this tweet on Sunday:
La Pasionaria, a statue on Glasgow’s Broomielaw that commemorates the Scottish volunteers who died fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil War, was also defaced.
The stickers appear to have been posted by individuals promoting a group called National Action, a Neo-Nazi youth movement that deploys material that has been described as “brutally racist”.
The group also posted “White Power – Trump” stickers at a university in Scotland prior to the presidential candidate visiting the country last weekend.
The messages of intolerance come amid warnings of a surge in hate crimes, after Britain voting to leave the European Union.
Muslim Council of Britain Secretary General Dr Shuja Shafi said there has recently been a shocking amount of this kind of discrimination, “with reports around the country of hate speech and minorities being targeted.”
However, the small group as been active since 2013 and there is no way to know for sure if the individuals posting the stickers were directly motivated by the recent Brexit vote.
Local people, including members of the Scottish feminist blog A Thousand Flowers, have responded by taking the stickers down and replacing them with pro-LGBT and pro-refugee messages.
