Upcoming film hopes to tackle the issues of sexuality and homophobia in football.

WONDERKID has got its new trailer, in which we meet a tormented young gay footballer as he struggles to pave his way in the industry.

The film, which is hoping to raise awareness about the lack of openly gay professionals in football and the masculine environment of sport, gives audiences a glimpse of the young footballer struggling inner turmoil and dealing with homophobia.

“With everything going on in the world currently this is a really important time for sexuality and gender issues,” director Rhys Chapman says.

“We have created an inspiring character who knows he is gay, accepts he is gay and wants to come out, but it is his profession that is holding him back.

“If enough people see this film, it can make a huge difference in football. Anyone that watches this film will understand that everyone deserves to live their life free from fear.

“They will see that it is a simple solution and all that is required to make footballers feel safe enough to come out is the acceptance of the general public and it is down to us to send the message.”

Ian McKellen previously lent his voice to an earlier WONDERKID trailer, back when it was being funded on Kickstarter. The campaign was backed by the Kevin Spacey Foundation, hate crime charity Galop and dozens of others.

Adidas, The FA, The Premier League and Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club are also supporting the film.

WONDERKID premieres at the Leicester Square Odeon in August and will be released online this year. Watch the trailer below:
