Wachowski sisters named Oscar voters amid push for diversity
The Wachowski sisters have joined the ranks of voters for the Academy Awards, in a bid to make the process more diverse.
The sisters, Lana and Lilly, both came out as trans in recent years.
They have now become Oscar Voters alongside 683 other people, in a bid to expand the membership of the voters and make it more diverse.
This follows the #OscarsSoWhite controversy during which the Academy was accused of overlooking BAME talent in all four of the acting categories.
46 percent of the new voters are female and 41 percent are people of colour.
Earlier this year, Lilly was widely hailed for her bravery after making her first public appearance since coming out at the GLAAD Media Awards.
The Matrix director came out earlier this year, after claiming she was pressured into publicly discussing her transition by the Daily Mail.
Lana transitioned in 2000 and made it public in 2012, when she became an advocate for trans awareness and opened up about the difficulties she faced in the process.
Netflix announced plans to make a second series of Sense8 last year.
But earlier this year Lilly pulled out, leaving Lana to run the project on her own.
The show features Aml Ameen, Bae Doona, trans actress Clayton, Tina Desai, Tuppence Middleton, Max Riemelt, Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Brian J Smith.
It also features former Doctor Who actor Freema Agyeman as the lesbian partner of Clayton’s character.
