New music video aims to celebrate the beauty of being bisexual (VIDEO)
Indie artist Alicia Champion has recorded ‘Bi’ – a song exclusively for and about bisexuals.
Alicia Champion recently recognised a major absence of bisexual expression in the music industry and took it upon herself to fill it.
Earlier this month, Champion released the music video for her song Bi, an anthem to the group that is often least recognised and discussed in the LGBT community.
The song gives bisexuality the visibility it rarely receives with Champion singing: “My, my, my I’m so bi. I want them all. The girls and guys.”
Bi is Champion’s first single, but she has over 15 years of experience in the music industry as a producer, composer, and in many other roles.
“The song is a celebration for bisexuals,” she explains. “But the overall message is to allow yourself to be attracted to whoever you want and to love whoever you want.”
The track struggled to gain attention when first released. Champion said there were “some hesitations from media outlets stating they weren’t sure how readers would respond to a bisexual themed song even though they thought it was amazing.”
However, fans that identified as bisexual started flooding her inbox and Tumblr account with praise, and thanked Champion for giving them “a song of their own.”
When Pulse nightclub in Orlando was attacked, Champion was on a promotional tour and stopped everything to respect the victims and process the event herself.
But again fans came forward in masses to remind the music industry veteran that “we need to keep playing this song, we need to keep dancing.”
So now Champion is promoting again – this time with a whole new momentum.
She’s working to take away the power in labels and the notion, even amongst the LGBT community, that bisexuality is “just a phase”.
“If we, as a community, are going to preach Love is Love, then we truly need to mean it,” Champion said.
