Ex-BBC journalist’s boyfriend proposes live from the Big Brother house (VIDEO)
Andy West was suspended by the broadcaster after challenging homophobic boxer Tyson Fury last year.
Ex-BBC journalist and current Big Brother contestant Andy West was in for a big surprise after his boyfriend Ed entered the house as part of this week’s shopping task.
The couple were enjoying a romantic dinner for two when Ed popped the question – which West happily accepted.
“Grey and old, baby,” Ed promised as he slipped the ring on his boyfriend’s finger.
“I’m so lucky,” West replied. “I knew it before, but being in here – I can’t live without you.”
West was suspended last year for criticising his employer, after boxing champ Tyson Fury was controversially nominated for the BBC’s Sports ‘Personality’ award last year – despite claiming that homosexuality and paedophilia will bring about the apocalypse.
The boxer has simultaneously stood by his comments and denied being homophobic – while also claiming that sex with children was legalised by a fictional ‘Gay Rights Act 1977‘.
West accused the BBC of “hurting me and other gay people by celebrating someone who considers me no better than a paedophile.”
He left the BBC after the row, saying: “I am ashamed to work for the BBC when it lacks bravery to admit it is making a mistake.”
Last week, complaints were lodged against the Channel 5 reality series – after a contestant used a homophobic slur.
Sam Giffen – who is gay himself – made the comments during an argument with housemates Ryan Ruckledge and Hughie Maughan, who have embarked in an on-air romance.
In the argument, Griffen yelled: “Everyone’s shouting in my face. I’ve done nothing wrong”, before adding that he would not be picked on by “bum boys”.
