Graham Norton quits Twitter: ‘It’s not a happy world’
The popular TV presenter says he will stick to Facebook from now on.
Graham Norton has decided to quit Twitter, after claiming it is “not a happy world”.
The chat show host has over 1.2million followers – but says he has grown tired of the hateful comments people post on it.
“I prefer Facebook because I have real friends there who agree with me. But on Twitter, not so much,” he said during his Radio 2 show.
“I have kind of fallen out of love with Twitter. It’s not a happy world so I have left it.”
Although Norton’s Twitter account is still posting automated links to his regular column in The Telegraph, he hasn’t posted any tweets himself since June 22.
Last year, Norton hit out at gay people who judge people for being camp, saying it is “heartbreaking”.
“I was just an effeminate little boy who turned into an effeminate man. And I think you still see little boys now and think, ‘Aw, he’s so going to be gay!’
“And that’s something that just seems to appear in nature, it just seems to happen,” he said.
“I think it’s weird that there is a section of the gay community that then judges those little boys. All that kind of stuff is just heartbreaking.”
Norton has also said he thinks gay men his age don’t want to date “someone their age”.
The host, 52, said he felt pressure to be “settled”, and that people often asked when he was going to get into a serious relationship.
He joins fellow presenter Stephen Fry – a serial quitter of Twitter – who last left the site following a BAFTAs gaffe back in February.
The actor, who was an early adopter of Twitter, faced strong criticism on the platform this after comparing costume designer Jenny Beavan to a “bag lady” as she picked up a BAFTA.
