Queen’s Greatest Hits the biggest selling album of all time in the UK
Queen’s Greatest Hits has been named as the biggest-selling album of all time.
The Greatest Hits was named in a list of the best selling albums in the UK over the past six decades.
A list was published by the Official Charts Company to mark the first UK chart on July 22 1956.
At the time, Frank Sinatra’s Songs for Swingin’ was the first ever number one hit in the UK.
Since then almost 1,100 albums have been named number one as music moved from vinyl to cassette to CD and eventually digital download.
The album was released back in 1981 and was number one for 729 weeks.
It has sold more than 6 million copies in the UK and is the best selling album of all time.
The list names a double win for Queen as the band’s Greatest Hits II holds the number ten spot.
Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Brian May said he thought the success of the album was a “great bit of news to wake up to” as well as “beyond his boyhood dreams”.

A newly-shared version of ‘We Are The Champions’ features Mercury’s isolated vocals from the track was released in January.
